The Temple of Promise build site in the foreground.

We have been working for several months on documenting via photo and film the build process of the Temple of Promise for Burning Man, and after being for nearly a month working in the desert of Nevada, we are happy to come back to reality and see one of our drone photos being used in this Fast Company article about the Temple build.

Take a read below as it's really fascinating to see how an art project is treated as a startup.

Bumper Madness

The film festival bumpers we worked on for SXSW that we did the VFX and Color Grading for keep getting great feedback in the blogosphere. Now that the film festival madness is over, some interviews are coming out that share some of the vision and ideas behind these awesome bumpers.

Read out the latest one, thanks to the always insanely talented team of Saschka Unseld and Kyle Ranson-Walsh, who hired us to work with them on finalizing the post-production for these.

Fun times!

SXSW 2015

We will not be attending SXSW this year, but we will be there in spirit. We recently completed work doing VFX and Color Grading for the South by Southwest film festival bumpers, with the creative team behind the beautiful Pixar short film "The Blue Umbrella", and SXSW just published a quick interview about it.

We will have much more press and news about this soon, and eventually we will post a more detailed behind-the-scenes of how we brought everything to life in these bumpers, but for now, we couldn't feel luckier to have collaborated with Saschka Unseld and Kyle Ranson-Walsh in this adventure.

If you go to SXSW, let us know what you thought! Read more here:

The most innovative Portuguese working abroad

The weekly Portuguese news magazine Sábado just published a new edition with a cover article about the most innovative Portuguese who are currently working abroad. They chose five people to talk about their careers and how they are finding success, and failure, while taking risks and moving forward in their respective fields.

Sutro Studios got a mention through Afonso Salcedo, one of the five people mentioned in the article. Congratulations to everyone involved, and all the other people chosen for the article.

Press Articles on "There Was Magic"

As we finish the first week of our campaign for "There Was Magic", we are happy to share a few of the press mentions our amazing documentary film has been getting. Check out the links below, and back our project on Kickstarter:

There Was Magic

We officially launched this morning our Kickstarter campaign for There Was Magic.

Here's a copy of the official press release.

“There Was Magic” on Kickstarter

San Francisco, CA – June 02, 2013 – “There Was Magic” is a touching, witty and glamorous look back at Hollywood and Fashion’s most memorable AIDS benefit.  A new documentary feature film directed by Afonso Salcedo which launched this morning in a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter. Spanning a period of ten years during the height of the AIDS epidemic, (1986-1996) “There Was Magic” provides a unique and rich perspective of historical significance for the LGBT, Fashion, Hollywood and communities at large around the world.  The film is inspired by the book Heavenly Bodies: Remembering Hollywood and Fashion’s Favorite AIDS Benefit written by Michael Anketell who founded the event in 1986.  Anketell, alongside a small group of friends inaugurated the first show in early 1987 against a backdrop of fear and misinformation.  Remarkably, over the next decade the events grew in numbers and stature attracting some of the most iconic figures in fashion, film, television, music and sports—raising more than $12 million for people living with HIV/AIDS. This is their story—the people behind the scenes and of course the fabulous people who ‘made the scene’.

You can find more information about the film on its official website:  http://therewasmagicfilm.com and the Kickstarter page at http://bit.ly/twmfilm. For general inquiries about the film, please contact therewasmagic@sutrostudios.com.

Afonso Salcedo has been working in the film industry for nearly 15 years, having collaborated on several Oscar winning films for Pixar Animation Studios and DreamWorks. He currently owns his own production company, Sutro Studios. “There Was Magic” is his first feature documentary.
