Porto

We just recently returned from visiting the city of Porto, Portugal, and with it we brought a lot of travel photos that we took throughout.

Atlantic Ocean in a hazy dreamy fog.

One of our passions is photographing our travels, and Porto being a World Heritage Site and surrounded by both an Ocean and a River full of wineries, you can imagine how cinematic everything is.

Porto is a World Heritage Site, and the downtown areas are incredible to walk around in.

Take a look at some of the ones we added to our portfolio on Photoshelter, or check out our 500px/Instagram adventures for even more.

THU

We're back at THU (Trojan Horse Was a Unicorn) for the 5th edition of this arts festival that encompasses the industries of film, video games, animation and traditional arts.

Trojan Horse Was a Unicorn takes place in Troia, Portugal.

It's one of the most inspiring week-long artistic adventures we've ever participated in and we couldn't be happier to be back and reconnect with some of the best talent in the world. This year, about 1,000 people will descend into this tiny paradise of a location near Lisbon, and over 70 countries are represented.

As part of the advisory board team, we will also do some Instagram takeovers throughout the week, and a few other surprises, so stay tuned!

The hallways of the Troia Design Hotel are ready for the hundreds of artists participating in the event.

Science. And Tech.

One of the many reasons we love what we do here at Sutro is the variety of projects, challenges, and ideas we creatively immerse ourselves in as we work with different clients around the world. This time around, we teamed up with MW Tech, a high-tech company in Porto, Portugal, who is quickly growing to becoming one of the most respected optic sources technology providers in the world.

With a current re-branding effort for the company, an upcoming website and multiple conference exhibits and talks, it was time to invest in a small video to introduce the products and services the company offers worldwide.

This last September we were in Portugal, and spent a whole day filming their high-tech labs and offices at Tecmaia, a pretty great and exciting tech campus venture in Portugal.

Our challenge this time was filming stages of product design and evolution of a very high-tech nature. Small details, tight spaces, machinery, and much more. We even had to use IR goggles for one of the shots, so you can see what is actually happening in front of you.

It was an amazing learning experience, and an incredible creative challenge, but thanks to the patience of our clients, and of course the tools we used to keep the workflow as effortless and productive as possible, we are now happy to share the final result with you all. Two videos were produced, one with simple animated text slides, and another one without.

Below, you can watch one of the versions. Everything was filmed mainly on the FS7, with cine gamma modes, and an amazing lens collection. ARRI LED lights were used to make sure we set up the shots properly, and of course, everything was edited in our Final Cut suite in Oakland. Final grading through DaVinci Resolve made sure we kept our cinematic quality we are known for already.

Thanks for the great adventure, and wishing MW Tech the best of success in the tech industry worldwide.

Framed Photos

We recently partnered again with our friends at Redbone Media, to have a couple of our photos framed and sold to a client in the other side of the country.

Check out the final look here! Incredible job by the framers, and we couldn't be happier to see some of our photos hanging on people's homes.

Be sure to check out our multiple photography pages, and portfolio, and online store for many more.

Happy Wednesday!

Trojan Horse

We are proud to announce we will be present in the amazing VFX/Animation/Games festival Trojan horse Was A Unicorn, this September in Portugal.

Afonso Salcedo will be giving a couple of talks and will be hanging out for the four days of the conference, answering any questions about career, animation, vfx, and whatever else you might want to know.

Stay tuned for further details.

Learn more about the conference in it's official website or Facebook page.

Antena 3

Afonso Salcedo just did a one hour interview over the phone with one of the most highly respected and listened to Radio shows in Portugal, Portugal 3.0. The show aired on Antena 3 this past Thursday evening, with a repeat air date this coming Sunday, May 19th at 6pm Lisbon time.

Afonso's whole career was talked about, including a big blurb on the work Sutro Studios is making and the new film There Was Magic, which is coming out soon.

You can listen to the interview here, but it's all in Portuguese.

Visao

Visao, the weekly news magazine in Portugal (similar to NewsWeek in the US), just celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special edition released today March 21st, with several articles on successful Portuguese people around the world. There's an insane amount of talent coming from Portugal as you can see through the pages of the magazine. We were fortunate enough to get a blurb in it, about some of the projects we are currently planning that hopefully will include Portugal in some way or another, and Afonso Salcedo being considered one of the top high-tech cinema gurus.

Thanks for the love!

IST Talk

The talk Afonso Salcedo of Sutro Studios gave at IST in Lisbon, Portugal, on February 25th is now online. You can watch the full-length talk which runs at around 1 hour or so. Please note that the slides are not filmed due to copyright issues and property ownership by Disney/Pixar. They own the material, not us, so they weren't allowed to be filmed.

Let us know what you think, but you can see the video here:

IST

The talk Afonso Salcedo gave at IST went tremendously well. Over 400 students came to the talk and we've received dozens of emails thanking us for the inspiring one hour sharing of ideas, experience and tips on film and cinematography. Couldn't be more excited and thankful to have met such wonderful people and meet some of the talented computer scientists and artists of the new generation. And on a more personal note, we hope we get to work with some of them sooner or later. Portugal is full of incredible talent. Here's a photo of the audience courtesy of Miguel Araujo Photography.

Roads. Frames. Dots.

"Roads. Frames. Dots. A talk in three acts."

From all the different roads travelled, the obstacles we face, the traffic jams you get into and even the accidents you deal with, all come to define your career, your success, the way you view things and the way you learn. Part of being a visual artist, of working with frames, images, still or in motion, is precisely what you have learned in life, what you observe, what you see and of course, the story you want to tell to other people. We’ll talk about what makes an image work, what tells a story, what guides the eye. Where’s the emotion, the feeling and how do you translate that into an image, into color, into light. From these first two parts of the talk, we conclude by mentioning how despite all the linearity of time itself, as you grow older, you should really make an effort to step aside and look at the dots instead. Because life becomes way more fun when you learn to see it as a cloud of dots, in a non-linear way.
